The firm has benefited from international consumers’ growing love affair with technology that uses its silicon chips, from digital cameras and flat panel TVs, to Microsoft Xbox 360 games consoles and in-car stereo systems.

Quarterly revenues rose 21 per cent to an all-time high of $70.4million (£35.2million) and underlying profits 37 per cent to $14.7million. Wolfson said it expected annual revenues to rise about 14 per cent to to between $226million and $232million.

But the shares slipped 24bp to 250fp on disappointment that there was no announcement of any new contract wins.

Wolfson chief executive Dave Shrigley said a “major manufacturer” was set to introduce a portable media player later this year with a Wolfson product in it but he gave no further details.
